The Evaluation & International Speech Contest

February 13, 2008

This Wednesday is the 2008 Spring Toastmaster Club Contest.  It is a time when members can gain more valuable experience speaking in front of a group in a friendly, safe environment.

The Evaluation Contest is when we have a test speaker come in from another club to give a 5 to 7 minute speech.  The contestants will then compose their evaluations and each will give his or hers take on the test speaker.

The International Speech Contest gives our members a chance to speak in a competition gaining a wonderful experience.  After all, that is why we joined Toastmaster; to easily speak to a group.

During this contest members have the opportunity to sharpen their skills on listening and giving feedback by being a judge.  They will be given an official ballot to score on various aspects of the evaluation and speech.  We have 4 members participating in the Evaluation Contest and 4 members who have done at least 6 manual speeches in the International Speech Contest. The First and Second Place Winners from each will then go to the Area Contest held on February 27, 2008.

Coming to this contest is a great way to give support to your fellow Toastmaster.

Guests are most welcome to come and be part of the audience.  It is a great way to learn what Toastmasters International is all about.  Afterwards, you will have the opportunity to speak to the contestants, officers and other members.  The meeting will begin at 6:15 p.m. and end at 8:00 p.m.

 Happy 20th Anniversary!
May 1 2007 is the twentieth anniversary of the charter of the Ann Arbor Toastmaster and Friends Toastmasters Club. The club began as the Domino's Farms Toastmaster Club under the sponsorship of Domino's Pizza owner Tom Monaghan. Terry Linden is the only current club member who was a charter member in 1987.

In 1990 the members relocated the club to Concordia University and changed its name to the Ann Arbor Toastmasters and Friends Toastmaster Club. We have won Distinguished Club numerouus times and last year was awarded the Presidential Distinquished Club recognition as one the top clubs in the district.

Individual member have distinquished themselves over our twenty year history. Sharon Smith won the Regional Evaluation Championship. Terry Linden has won the District Championship in Humorous, Table Topics and Evaluation on several occassions. Members have served the district in many leadership roles, building new clubs, new club mentors, training at TM seminars, program presenters, and various other significant contributions.

The AATM continues to be noted for the friendly and supportive environment offered to all who attend as members or guest. Meetings have always provided great value in education, participation, and fellowship. Plus a lot of fun too.

Congratulations members past and present!
